Role of Shilajit in Infertility

Shilajit (botanical name: Asphaltum), also known as mineral pitch, is a natural exudate oozed from rocks during hot weather in the lower Himalayas, Vindhyas and some other mountain ranges. It is a sticky, tar-like substance formed over centuries by the decomposition of plant and microbial matter. Shilajit is quite rich in minerals, fulvic acid, and other organic compounds.

It has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly in India, as a rejuvenating and revitalizing substance. It has been used as an ayurvedic medicine for general physical strengthening, anti-aging, blood sugar stabilization, urinary tract rejuvenation, enhanced brain functioning potency, kidney rejuvenation, immune system strengthening, anaemia, osteoporosis, arthritis, hypertension and infertility and many other conditions. It is often classified as an adaptogen, a substance that is believed to help the body adapt to stress and maintain balance.

Some people believe that Shilajit may have cognitive-enhancing effects, including improved memory and focus. In ayurveda, infertility is not seen as a stand-alone disease or disorder. It is a result of other ailments in the body. Shilajit due to its ability to treat various disorders, being an adaptogen, is beneficial for infertility.

Here are some ways in which Shilajit is thought to potentially contribute to infertility treatment, based on traditional beliefs and preliminary research:

Female Fertility :

Some traditional beliefs suggest that Shilajit may have properties that enhance fertility in both men and women. It is thought to improve reproductive health by providing essential minerals, fulvic acid, and other bioactive compounds. Fulvic acid,  improves your gut’s ability to absorb essential nutrients and minerals from food, which helps in improving metabolism and reproductive function indirectly. Irregular menstrual cycles in females can impact fertility. Shilajit helps in regulating their menstrual cycle and thus has a positive impact on the reproductive health of women.

Shilajit can also be beneficial in treating anaemia. It is a good iron supplement and help in increasing the level of haemoglobin in the blood. It helps in overcoming weakness in women due to menstrual losses from the body  and contributes positively to their health.

Shilajit is claimed to be very effective for female fertility, but more scientific evidence is required to back the claim.

Male fertility:

Shilajit is believed to be a Vajikarak (aphrodisiac) and can used for the treatment of male infertility. It  has been studied for its potential impact on male reproductive health. Some research suggests that it may influence spermatogenesis, the process of sperm production. Male fertility is directly linked to sperm quantity and quality. Low sperm in men could be due to  lifestyle choices, hormonal imbalances, inherited factors, and underlying health conditions. Shilajit is believed to improve sperm count, motility, and morphology. Studies on rats show a positive impact on sperm.

Shilajit is rich in antioxidants, which may help combat oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress can negatively impact reproductive health of both men and women. It can damage sperm cells in men and this damage can reduce sperm motility and increase the likelihood of abnormal sperm morphology (shape and size). Oxidative stress can affect the process of ovulation and may lead to the production of poor-quality eggs in women. It can also interfere with the implantation of the embryo in the uterus and contribute to the aging of the ovaries, which can affect the quantity and quality of eggs available for fertilization.
